Born a desert child out of Arizona,  Malakai, emerges as a trailblazing force in the realm of storytelling, community organizing and interactive media.. With a mission to reshape the narratives of the black diaspora, she draws inspiration from her desert origins and maintains an unwavering connection to Afro-futurist culture within fantasy, science fiction, and ancestral-themed horror.

 

Her creative journey currently takes her to platforms like Showtime,HBO, Netflix, CBS, and Bet.

 

Malakai's emerging legacy continues to illuminate pathways for generations to come. Her short films have captivated audiences at renowned festivals like Sundance, ABF, PAFF, and Cannes, casting an enchanting spell that challenges conventions on black womanhood and the African diaspora through a variety of perspectives.

 

As the driving force and founder behind Made In Her Image (MIHI), she empowers young creators of color, forging equitable collaborations with industry giants like A24, Disney, and Panavision to amplify her mission, impacting over 2,000 young women and over 150,000  community members since 2018.

Malakai's dedication to equity and education led Made In Her Image to receive the SXSW 2020 Community Service Award. Their accomplishments include being named a 2023 Project Greenlight Finalist, serving as an AT&T Hello Lab Director, receiving The Horizon Award with their film showcased at Sundance as part of the Horizon Award Showcase, and earning the Contemporary Forum Artist Award, along with winning Best Sci-Fi at the 2020 Micheaux Film Festival. Through their work, Malakai explores themes of mortality and black identity.

 

Beyond the accolades, Malakai embodies transformation, sparking a symphony of change in her work through dark and unfounded perspectives. Her artistry and boundless philanthropy continue to leave an indelible mark on a world craving innovation.

Matr3arc stands as my personal declaration, embodying not just my roles as a founder and artist, but also the core values of community that drive me. This ethos, of being a conduit for change, resonates deeply with me as an artist, a creative, an activator, and a curator. The seeds of our mission as a company are to provide equity and encouragement through art and movement. As a social impact art house, we aim to revolutionize film, media, and tech by prioritizing equity and community. Collaborating with Made In Her Image (MIHI), we empower over 2,000 mentees and engage with more than 10,000 community members. Together, we tear down barriers, nurture creativity, and shape a future characterized by inclusivity and empowerment.
